The book "The Prostate Miracle" was published and copyrighted in 2000. This book nor the authors endorse the product Prostate Miracle in any way.
On a visit to Natures Health Supply's Prostate Miracle website it is troubling that any manufacturer would announce "Prostate Wars" and attempt to position itself as an authority and make negative and libel statements about other manufacturers. A true comparison would educate the consumer on the difference of one product versus another. For a true look at any manufacturer it would be best to consult the Better Business Bureau.
The following quote is from the Prostate Miracle website: "Prostate Miracle is formulated using beta-sitosterol extracted (in the U.S.) from sugar cane."
Please be advised that worldwide sugar cane is rarely if ever harvested and used to obtain beta-sitosterol. Almost all sugarcane is used to produce premium sugar for the food industry. Worldwide the production of sugar cane has been reduced due to the fact that almost all sugar now comes from the sugar beat due to reduced costs in processing. In order to abstract Beta-sitosterol from sugar cane it would be necessary to harvest the grown green plant and then perform the extractions from the pulp. The truth is that sugar cane fields are burned prior to harvesting for the production of sugar. This which in turn increases green house gases.
The following quote is from the Prostate Miracle website: "Unlike most prostate formulas, Prostate Miracle® contains pharmaceutical grade, 98.7% pure, phytosterol complex, with at least 50% beta-sitosterol. In addition, this includes 2-to-2.5% beta-sitostanols. Sitostanols are much more delicate than the sterols, and this is a good indication that the phytosterol complex has been properly extracted and is of the highest quality available." As someone with a background in organic, inorganic, and biochemistry who has performed esterification experiments I can assure you that the quality of a phytosterol complex has absolutely nothing to do with the presence of 2-to-2.5% beta-sitostanols. It is true that the stanol ester is structurally more delicate. Nature's Health Supply talks about "Copy Cat Companies" and "knock-off products" in its attempt to convince consumers that the company is of a higher moral standard. A review of the literature finds an interesting fact. The book titled: "The Prostate Miracle - New Natural Therapies That Can Save Your Life!" was published and Copyrighted in 2000 by Jesse A. Stoff, M.D. and Dallas Clouatre, Ph.D.. "Nature's Health Supply, Inc first began producing Prostate Miracle® in 2001." I guess the Prostate Miracle label name was not an original after all.
The following claims are also made by the Prostate Miracle brand. "In clinical studies, Prostate Miracle® was proven effective in 95% of patients, significantly decreasing the prostate size while dramatically reducing BPH symptoms." A review of published literature does not support the above claims. Prostate Miracle, the product has not been used in clinical studies which have demonstrated and confirmed any of the above claims.
"Prostate Miracle® May Help Prevent and Slow the Growth of Prostate Cancer. Each daily serving of Prostate Miracle® provides 200 mcg of selenium which is the same amount used in the numerous studies which have all confirmed the tremendous benefit selenium has in both treating and preventing prostate cancer. In fact it has been demonstrated that 200 mcg per day of selenium may actually reduce the risk of getting prostate cancer (by as much as 50%). The benefit of selenium is not limited to prostate cancer . . . other studies have shown that taking 200 mcg of selenium per day may actually protect against lung cancer & guard against colon cancer as well. Although the RDA for selenium is 70 mcg, most researchers agree this is a very conservative value . . . And that considerably higher doses are safe . . . there certainly aren't any published studies that indicate 200 mcg per day is harmful in any way." The above claims regarding cancer are not supported and unfounded. The facts: "October 28, 2008 -- The National Cancer Institute has halted its $114 million study of whether vitamin E and selenium can prevent prostate cancer. They can't -- at least not in the formulations and dosages used in the study, called SELECT (SELenium and vitamin ECancer prevention Trial). The safety panel for the 35,000-man study called for a halt when an early look at the data showed no benefit for the treatment. The men received either vitamin E (400 milligrams) and selenium (200 micrograms), vitamin E and placebo, selenium and placebo, or placebos alone." This quote is from: News release, National Cancer Institute. National Cancer Institute: "Questions and Answers: Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT)," Oct. 28, 2008. WebMD.
